Equine Training (APSC 2724) is an exceptionally popular class in the Equine Emphasis within the Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences. Taught in the fall semester, the major goals of the undergraduate class are to provide students with an opportunity to handle and train horses on a one-to-one basis and to prepare those horses for the Hokie Harvest Sale, a public auction of livestock.

In class sections with small enrollment, each student works with a partner and the two partners are responsible for the training of two horses. A professional horse trainer, Ms. Kim Reid of Pulaski , VA teaches these horse handling sections. The classes meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from late August until the end of October, when the Hokie Harvest Sale is held. Additionally, a discussion group of all enrolled students is held on Tuesday evenings in which scientific articles pertaining to equine behavior and preparation for the sale are discussed.
