FERTHERLICHT is an attractive and impressively bred young mare that was donated to Virginia Tech's Equine Program by Bettie, Steve and Marion Carroll of Sullivan Farm, Walkertown, NC. Fertherlicht was going well under saddle but sustained an injury that ended her performance career. With the exceptional ancestry in Fertherlicht's pedigree and the successes of her siblings, Fertherlicht's worth to Virginia Tech's breeding program is tremendous. Virginia Tech is greatly indebted to the Carrolls for this valuable gift.

Fertherlicht's sire Werther was the Hanoverian Stallion of the Year in 1992. A 16.1 hand chestnut, Werther has strength, bone and jumping ability from his sire Wendekreis. He has inherited expressive movement from his damsire Marcio xx. Werther's offspring are known for athleticism, soundness, versatility and personality. Forty-one of his sons have been licensed and 90 of his daughters have been designated States Premium Mares.

Fertherlicht is from a very strong damline and has four very successful half siblings:

Wolkenspring by Wolkenstein II was champion of her Hanoverian inspection (7.5 overall with 8s for her gaits) and Grand Champion at Dressage at Lexington in 2000. In USDF Regional Championships she was fourth at Training Level in 2002 and fifth at First Level in 2003.  She made her debut at Second Level in June 2004 at the Capital Classic in Raleigh and was 1st (66%), 2nd (65%), and earned two thirds (63 and 60%) in the four tests she showed (Second Level Tests 1, 2, and 3).

Another half sister, Wishes Granted by Wolkenstein II, won Training Level Test 3 at Dressage at Lexington in 2003 with the highest Training Level score of the day, a 72.5%. Full brother FlyBy won Training Level Test 4 with his amateur owner Robin Rich at the USDF Pinehurst Fall Dressage show in September 2003. Fertherlicht's half sister, Wiesling by Wolkentanz, won her Fillies of 2000 class at Dressage at Lexington in 2000 and was Reserve Champion Filly and Reserve Champion Young Horse.
