Sporthorse Breeding

At Virginia Tech, lessons in horse management, training and equine science are taught using an exceptional herd of horses. It is our philosophy that students who wish to pursue careers in the horse industry should have horses of the highest possible quality from which to learn! We have chosen to focus our efforts on the production of horses for the hunter, dressage, showjumping and eventing disciplines, while always striving to breed sound, athletic horses with temperaments suitable for youth, amateur and professional riders.

Although the breeding program is still fairly young, horses bred by Virginia Tech have received numerous championship honors and horse of the year titles nationwide. In 2005, Virginia Tech produced more Premium Foals and Inspection Site Champions with the International Sporthorse Registry and Oldenburg Registry of North America than any other breeder in the United States, and in 2007 bred the highest-scoring colt in the entire North American inspection tour. Virginia Tech is the ONLY land grant university to fully incorporate a sporthorse breeding program into its undergraduate animal science curriculum.

Approximately 20 foals are born at Virginia Tech each spring, and students have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of breeding and training our horses.
