| At Virginia Tech, lessons in horse management, training and equine science are taught using an exceptional herd of horses. It is our philosophy that students who wish to pursue careers in the horse industry should have horses of the highest possible quality from which to learn! We have chosen to focus our efforts on the production of horses for the hunter, dressage, showjumping and eventing disciplines, while always striving to breed sound, athletic horses with excellent minds. |

Although the breeding program is still fairly young, horses bred by Virginia Tech have received numerous championship honors and horse of the year titles nationwide. The breeding program is well-known for its quality. In 2005, Virginia Tech produced more Premium Foals and Inspection Site Champions with the International Sporthorse Registry and Oldenburg Registry of North America than any other breeder in the United States. In 2007, Virginia Tech bred Windsor VT, the highest-scoring colt in the entire North American inspection tour. In 2008, Virginia Tech students won at Dressage at Devon with the VT-bred youngster Landmark VT and Horses Unlimited's young Liberando VT became a licensed stallion with ISR/Oldenburg NA. Horses bred by Virginia Tech are ridden by top professional and amateur riders alike! Virginia Tech is the ONLY land grant university to fully incorporate a sporthorse breeding program into its undergraduate animal science curriculum. About15-20 foals are born at Virginia Tech each spring, and our students have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of breeding and training the horses. |
